Recreation….A Positive Impact For All
As the season moves from summer to fall, I have had
the opportunity to reflect on the powerful impact of recreation,
not only for the thousands of program participants,
but for the program providers: the young people
who are the camp leaders, swim instructors, preschool
activity specialists, sports coaches, fitness trainers,
Community Center event staff and receptionists.
The recreation setting creates the ideal environment
for young adults to experience their first attempt at
leadership, teaching, motivating, influencing the lives
and opportunities of others. Camp leaders learn the
incredible thrill of interacting with youngsters, perhaps
watching them experience a recreational activity for
the first time, like paddling a kayak, snorkeling in the
ocean, surfing, or spiking a volleyball. They learn the
impact of role modeling, of setting an example, of resolving
disputes, of laughter, fun and adventure.
The impact and inspiration of the camp experience is
frequently more powerful for the leader than the camper.
As one 2008 summer employee commented, “Now
as I go off to my first year at college, I feel that working
at Camp Coronado was more a camp for me than my
campers. This job has made me feel confident enough
to not only care for myself but also to care for others
with a sense of ease and even joy; I feel ready now to
go off on my own”.
The Recreation Services Department is proud and privileged
to be providing life enriching experiences in the
Coronado community. The power of recreation touches
everyone’s lives in a positive way. We truly “Create
Community Through People, Parks and Programs”.
Sincerely,
Linda Rahn
Director of Recreation Services
