How's this for funky?
The 500 West is an "upscale hostel" in the European tradition. You have to share a bathroom, but it has a lock and you don't have to share the flat-screen TV in your room. Clean, cheap & doubles as a YMCA fitness center. Free Wi-Fi. MAP

Marina Inn San Diego room photo
A bit better, but a hike.
The Marina Inn & Suites is too far for most to walk, but you can walk along the water and it is only one long block from a San Diego Trolley station to Comic-Con. This is defiantly a mid-century motel, but half the rooms have a bay view and all the rooms share the ambience of planes landing. MAP

Historic and pink.
The Hotel Ramada Inn & Suites Gaslamp really is in a 1913 restored historic hotel. There is a terrific view from the rooftop terrace. The  bar next door is open 24 hrs. on weekends and sports the heel marks of Joan Crawford. MAP

The spirits will move you
at the Horton Grand Hotel.
What do you get when you push two old hotels together where people have died? You get a haunted hotel. Done and redone, this is a short walk to Comic-Con and even if you don't bring a friend, you may find a roommate. MAP
