Border Inspection Station by Thomas North |
|
The Great San Diego Sand Bowl of 1923-25 sent
many San Diego sod farmer North. At the San Diego County line, Oregon had set up an
inspection station to check for Sand. The officials of Oregon believed that the Sand Bowl in San Diego was caused not by a 2 ½ year drought, but by the presence of vast quantities of sand that had been washed up from the sea. They felt that if they were able to keep the "seed sand" from coming in from San Diego, that they could avoid a sand bowl from forming in their jurisdiction. San Diego immigrants, known by the Oregonions as "Sandy Dagos", were often
strip searched by the inspection station police. One former San Diegan actually enjoyed
the strip search so much that he re-crossed the boarder as many 27 times each week. |
